Music Workshops

Calon Afan is doing more heritage work in schools – this time music!
With a little bit of extra time to finish our Afan Erioed 2 project in 2026 we continued our brilliant heritage-through-arts work by engaging more young people in NPT schools – this time in the wonderful tradition of Welsh music that has survived against the odds for hundreds of years.
To do this, we have worked with some of the finest traditional musicians in Wales. We are lucky in that two of these are from the County! The workshops will be led by Aneirin Jones, a wonderful fiddler, and member of the internationally recognised folk chamber group Vrï. In the group he plays alongside Jordan Price-Williams, the cellist from Cwmafan, who is supporting Calon Afan to drive forward our initiative to develop traditional music in the County. Delivering schools’ workshops in Welsh song, tunes and dance with Aneirin was Patrick Rimes, a distinguished fiddler who plays with Vrï and is also known for his work with the group Calan, and Osian Gruffydd, a great musician and clog-dancer.
Our free music workshops for schools in the County supported the aims of Cynefin and the Language Charter, offering learners a meaningful way to explore their cultural surroundings and understand their place within Wales’ musical landscape. More importantly, it was an opportunity to connect young people with music, helping them experience tradition as something living, creative, and relevant to them.
As the previous workshops, these free workshops were funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund, UK Government, through NPT Council.
We worked with five schools over two weeks and hope to be able to offer something similar in the near future; if your school is interested too, then do let us know and we’ll do our best to help: contact@calonafan.org
